Man arrested for golf club manager’s murder

2010-11-26 10:08

A 39-year-old man was arrested today in connection with the murder of a Walmer golf club manager in Port Elizabeth.

Shortly after the murder, the man, a taxi driver, opened a case of kidnapping and armed robbery at the Kabega Park police station, spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg said.

He told police that he had been hijacked by two men who then kidnapped him in his taxi and stole his cellphone.

The Walmer police who had been investigating the murder case realised that the taxi driver had made a false report and that he was connected to the murder of the golf club manager, Gerry Hoekstra, she said.

“Police called the taxi driver yesterday and asked him to come to the police station because they had some questions about his hijacking incident.

“When he arrived at the station police arrested him.”

Hoekstra (61) was on his way to the bank on Monday morning with the weekend takings from the golf club when he was shot through the window of his car.

Despite being shot he drove off but later crashed his car into a tree and died on the scene.

Janse van Rensburg said the scene was first treated as an accident but when paramedics saw the gunshot wound an investigation was opened by police.

She said police were still looking for two other men who were allegedly involved.

“We hope to arrested them soon,” Janse van Rensburg said.
