Man burnt beyond recognition in Soweto fire

2013-06-06 16:26

A man has died in a fire in his home in Emdeni, Soweto, Gauteng police said.

“A 39-year-old man went to bed last night and his room caught fire,” warrant officer Kay Makhubela said today.

“We don’t know what caused the fire. He is believed to have inhaled smoke ... and burnt beyond recognition.”

The man’s home and belongings were destroyed. Police had not ruled out a heater causing the fire. An inquest docket was opened.

“We appeal that people switch off the heater when they go to sleep. They must also make sure not to leave children alone with heaters, as they are a danger to children,” said Makhubela.
