Man confesses to killing cop

2013-04-12 11:15

A man has pleaded guilty to murdering a Cape Town policeman he suspected was having an affair with his wife.

The Cape Argus reported today that Barnabas Sentiwe entered into a plea and sentencing agreement with the state yesterday for the death of Constable Monwabisi Mnyombolo in October 2009.

Sentiwe admitted he went to the policeman’s house on October 24 2009, and accused him of having an affair with his wife, Phumza Veli, a co-accused in the case.

An argument ensued and Sentiwe stabbed Mnyombolo.

He then carried the body home and buried it in the back yard of his Mfuleni home.

In April, the following year, he sold the house. In May 2011, the owners of the house saw a piece of cloth sticking out of the sand, pulled it and discovered a pair of trousers with bones.

Forensic tests were done and the bones were identified as belonging to Mnyombolo.

According to the report, Sentiwe had agreed to a jail term of 20 years but Judge Robert Henney said he first had to satisfy himself that the sentence was just.

Legal teams were asked to research the sentencing guidelines for the death of a police officer and report back to the court.

Veli has been accused as an accessory after the fact but was not asked to plead.
