A man has been arrested for allegedly killing the owner of a shop in Kempton Park, east of Johannesburg at the weekend.

The man (25) is believed to be a former employee at Annemarie van Zyl’s shop in Newton Street, police Captain Jethro Mtshali said today.

He allegedly entered the shop at about 7.30am on Saturday morning, withdrew a sharp instrument, and stabbed the woman several times.

He then walked out of the shop with an undisclosed amount of money, Mtshali said.

The woman’s daughters, aged six and eight, were at the shop during the incident.

The eight-year-old girl called out for help shortly after the man left the shop.

“Fortunately, police were patrolling near the scene of the crime and saw the man... He was arrested,” Mtshali said. His hands were allegedly covered in blood.

The man is expected to appear in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on charges of robbery and murder today.

The children are traumatised and will receive counselling, Mtshali said.
