Man held over teen's death in possible revenge killing

A man has been arrested in connection with the death of an Eldorado Park teenager, Gauteng police said.

A 33-year-old man was arrested yesterday, after the teenager’s body was discovered in a field on Sunday morning, Captain Nomvula Mbense said today.

The 18-year-old woman was reported missing on Saturday, after she failed to return from drawing money for her parents on Friday.

“We are waiting for the post mortem to see the cause of death,” Mbense said.

An inquest docket was opened, but the results of the post mortem would dictate whether a case of murder would be investigated, she explained.

The arrested man would appear in the Protea Magistrate’s Court tomorrow.

Mbense would not comment on reports that the teenager’s murder may have been revenge for a similar murder earlier this year.

“The police are investigating, and don’t want to disturb the investigation by commenting on that,” she said.

The Star today named the 18-year-old as Sandy Maharla, and reported that her killing could be a revenge attack relating to the February murder of Micaela Manneson.

Jonathan Maharla, the brother of the teenager murdered on Sunday, was convicted of Manneson’s murder.

According to the report, Manneson’s mother, Ellen, claimed she felt forced into signing the plea bargain that secured a 15-year sentence for her daughter’s killer.

“Advocate Adele de Klerk called me and asked me to sign [the plea bargain],” Ellen Manneson said before the sentencing.

“She said that if I didn’t sign it, Jonathan [Maharla] would be out on the streets again [soon].

“So I had no choice. But I’m very unhappy with such a light sentence.”
