Man hijacked, but saved by sticking hand out of boot

2011-04-25 12:59

A 60-year-old man was hijacked and robbed in Despatch today, Uitenhage police said.

Lieutenant Colonel Priscilla Naidu said the man was seated in his white Mercedes Benz, chatting to a woman he had just met, when an unknown man approached him, asking for money.

Four other men arrived and produced knives. The couple were searched and R700 in cash as well as bank cards were taken.

The man was ordered to get into the back seat. Two of the robbers got into the car and drove until the car ran out of petrol.

The victim was shoved in the boot of the car and the two men and the woman disappeared.

The man managed to kick out the tail lights from the inside and stuck his hand out. A passing motorist saw this and contacted police.

Naidu said police suspect the woman may have also been involved in the hijacking.

“We suspect that she is also a part of it as the victim had just met her and didn’t really know her that well.” she said.

No arrests have been made and police are investigating a case of vehicle hijacking.
