Man missing after boat capsizes

2010-11-25 10:30

A 22-year old man is missing after the boat he was fishing in capsized on Wednesday night, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said today.

“At 06h20 Sea Rescue Hermanus volunteers were [informed] of two men missing from a night out fishing on the Bot River Lagoon,” said Henk Henn, NSRI Hermanus station commander.

A search commenced for a 54-year old male and his 22-year old son who were last known to have launched a 3.5 metre boat to go fishing, in the evening, he said.

When they failed to return by 6am family members raised the alarm.

Yesterday morning the capsized boat was discovered by sea rescue volunteers and shortly after that the father was found on the shore.

He was treated for shock and taken to hospital.

The search continues for the missing son.

“According to the survivor they were capsized by a wave at around 11.30pm last night... Wearing oil skins and gum boots but no life-jackets hampered their efforts to stay afloat.”

Apparently the father was clinging to the upturned hull of the boat and his son was clinging to a floating fuel tank.

“It appears that at some point during the night the 22-year old male succumbed to the elements and disappeared. The father said that at some point he had turned away from his son but when he looked again his son had disappeared.”

The father then managed to swim to the shore.

Police have opened an inquest docket.
