Man rescued in Joburg fire

2014-06-20 10:35

A man was rescued shortly after 8am today after a fire destroyed one floor of an office building in Braamfontein, Johannesburg emergency services said.

“We just rescued one male who was trapped inside the building on the 25th floor and will be transporting him to Milpark Hospital,” Johannesburg emergency services spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi said today.

“He was the only person trapped inside. Right now, the fire is extinguished but we are damping down and extinguishing the hot spots. We are still on the scene and checking the floors to make sure that the building is safe for use.”

He said the man would be assessed at the hospital.

Earlier, Mulaudzi said the sixth floor was destroyed when the fire broke out after 2am.

“The investigating team will start finding out whether the building is safe for usage and what had caused the fire,” he said.

The 25-storey building is on Smit Street.

Johannesburg metro police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said traffic was being diverted into Harrison Street.

“Smit Street has been closed off, motorists can use Harrison, Bree or Jorissen streets as alternative routes,” he said.
