Man wins R69m lottery jackpot

2010-07-17 10:44

A 29-year-old Western Cape man won Tuesday’s Powerball jackpot of

R69 million.

The married father of a one-year-old had claimed his prize but had

not recovered from the shock of winning the jackpot, spokesperson Thembi Tulwana

said.

The man, who spent R21 on his ticket after choosing his numbers at

random, told the operator of the national lottery, Gidani: “I am overwhelmed by

shock, I still cannot believe it.”

He said he went to the nearest retailer to check the winning

numbers, jotted them down then went back to his car to check them in

private.

At first he thought he had matched four numbers.

Tulwana said: “Excited at the prospect of having won something, he

called his wife to share the news.”

He realised only the next day when he went over the ticket in

detail that he had won the jackpot.

She said he told his immediate family, with whom he had a “very

close relationship” with and trusted “entirely”.

Tulwana said: “So close is his relationship with his family that he

asked an uncle to keep the ticket in his safe until he was ready to come forward

to claim.”

Tulwana said he planned to start a small business and invest the

rest.

Tuesday’s jackpot was the second highest won since PowerBall was

launched in October last year.

In February, a mother of two from the Western Cape won a R91m

Jackpot, the highest since the lottery was introduced in South Africa.
