The Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory has extended its condolences to the family and friends of pop singer Whitney Houston, who died on Saturday.

“Ms Houston sang for [former president] Mr Nelson Mandela at a White House dinner in his honour in October 1994,” the centre’s spokesperson Sello Hatang said in a statement today.

“She dedicated to him her rendition of the song, Greatest Love of All ... May she rest in peace.”

The 48-year-old singer was found dead in a Beverly Hills hotel at the weekend. The cause of death has not yet been confirmed.
