Mandela daughters hear of his death at film premiere

2013-12-06 06:27

Nelson Mandela’s two youngest daughters were at the royal premiere of “Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom” in London when their father passed away.

The movie, which was released in South Africa last week, is based on the former president’s life.

“They [the daughters] received the news of their father’s passing during the screening and immediately left the cinema,” said the Nelson Mandela Foundation in a statement.

Among the people at the premiere were the Duke of Cambridge Prince William and his wife, the Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton.

President Jacob Zuma announced just before midnight yesterday that Mandela had died at his Houghton home in Johannesburg.

“He passed on peacefully in the company of his family around 8.50pm on December 5,” Zuma said.

“He is now resting, he is now at peace. Our nation has lost its greatest son.”

Zuma said flags around the country would be flown at half-mast from today until after Mandela’s funeral.

“Our beloved Madiba will be accorded a state funeral. I order that all flags be lowered to half-mast from tomorrow, 6 December, and to remain at half-mast till after the funeral as we gather to pay our last respects,” he said.
