Qunu residents have stayed indoors during the funeral of former president Nelson Mandela, leaving the viewing areas around the village almost empty.

A handful of people were in the viewing area closest to the marquee where the funeral is being conducted.

In the viewing area, which has an amazing view of the funeral marquee, the few who have made their way there sat on plastic chairs, which were in short supply.

Some of the villagers had to stand in the little tent or sit on the damp grass during the first hour of the service.

In the same tent, women from the ANC ward committee in the village cut cabbages and peeled potatoes. There were pots boiling on gas stoves as the village women cooked while stealing moments to watch the service on the big screen.

The women were asked to cook for those who had come to watch while the men focused on the service.

The viewing screen, which had been up for over 48 hours was still not fully functional.
