Mandela grandson in court battle

2011-10-27 07:31

The grandson of former President Nelson Mandela is in a court battle with his estranged wife over failure to pay maintenance.

Mandla Mandela, the chief of the Mvezo in Eastern Cape, failed to pay R20 000 towards Tando Mabunu-Mandela’s legal fees and monthly maintenance after an order by a Mthatha court, The Times reported.

Mabunu-Mandela was granted an order by the Mthatha High Court in June that property to the value of R100 000 be attached.

Attempts to attach property were unsuccessful.

According to the report, ad hoc sheriff Ncedile Ntsibantu said a warrant of execution was executed on Monday but no property was attached after a diligent search.

Mabuna-Mandela’s lawyer Wesley Hayes said he and his client would have to find alternative ways to make Mandela pay.

“Maybe, after considering all our options, we will garnishee his parliament salary or possibly any other income.”

Half of the money in Mandela’s bank accounts had been frozen pending finalisation of the divorce. His marriage to a woman from Reunion, with whom he conceived a baby boy, had also been annulled.
