Mandela’s appearance at World Cup uncertain

2010-06-03 15:19

It is uncertain whether former president Nelson Mandela will attend

the 2010 Fifa World Cup.

The ANC told a media briefing shortly after midday that Mandela

would be attending the opening and closing matches.

However, French news agency AFP quoted Mandela’s grandson, Mandla,

as saying that the former president was too frail to attend.

“I, as a member of the family, together with the family, have taken

the decision that my grandfather is 92 years and that it would really be a

challenge to take him out in a cold winter day to go and watch a game of

football,” Mandla told AFP.

“We, as South Africans, and the international community need to

start considering his health. I know that he’ll not be at the opening

match.”

Nelson Mandela Foundation spokesperson Sello Hatang said Mandela’s

movements were not disclosed to the public for security reasons.

ANC spokesperson Jackson Mthembu said the ANC had received the

information about Mandela’s attendance at the World Cup from Mandela’s office.

He referred journalists to the Nelson Mandela Foundation.
