Mandoza on the skids

2013-11-03 10:00

It’s time local music stars learn to manage their cash properly and empower themselves

After reading the unfortunate yet self-imposed bankruptcy blues  of Mandoza, I advise him to listen to the old-school song by Millie Jackson titled Sweet Music Man.

Towards the end, she sings: “Sing your song, sweet music man/You’re now making a living doing one-night stands/They are through with you/They don’t need you ... any more.”

When will these artists ever learn to manage their finances? After one hit, they run away from themselves by abandoning their own kind in the townships to go to the suburbs.

Most local celebrities copy the lifestyles of international stars like Beyoncé and Jay-Z on the meagre royalties generated by record sales in one country, Mzansi.

It’s a well-known fact that many of South Africa’s musicians take advances and borrow money from record companies to maintain their pretentious lifestyles.

Why don’t these artists admit that the people who make the most money out of them are the anonymous record company executives?

Artists must start to empower themselves.

I can’t wait to get my hands on Lira’s new book about this industry. I advise all artists to read it, judging by the nature of published extracts.

It goes to show that a level-headed artist can survive in this industry if they shrug off the hype and live within their means.

As entertainers, we are seasonal workers, so we do need something to fall back on in the form of education, trades and skills.
