Mangaung Metro, taxi operators reach deadlock

2012-01-21 16:44

Negotiations between taxi operators and the Mangaung Metro on a new multi-million rand intermodal transport facility have deadlocked.

Hundreds of commuters were stranded last week when taxi operators went on strike. The operators are complaining about the new taxi rank that forms part of the facility, which cost the municipality R400 million.

Qondile Khedama, spokesperson for the municipality, said an agreement with the Greater Bloemfontein Taxi Association about the relocation of taxi operators to the new facility was reached in December last year. He said the relocation process has been smooth until January 12 2012 – when operators went on strike.

“Once again the city created a platform for all parties involved to come up with an amicable solution to this matter. After protracted meetings it was apparent that the industry is not negotiating in good faith and they declared a deadlock,” said Khedama.

He said the municipality is “more than willing to resuscitate negotiations”.

Taxi operators claim the municipality has done nothing to address their concerns about the facility – including a very narrow entrance and exit route that causes congestion.

Taxi operators are now operating outside the new facility.
