Mangaung will buy tickets for fans

2010-03-02 07:31

MANGAUNG Mayor Playfair Morule has told top SA  2010 World Cup Local Organising Committee (LOC) and Fifa officials in front of a local and international media contingent that his city will buy World Cup tickets in bulk and distribute them among the Free State football supporters.

And soon as he had made this announcement – which had all elements of being a spur of the moment thing as it was not on his prepared speech that was distributed to the media before presentation – questions were being whispered among members of the fourth estate.

These included where the money would come from as well as the criteria that will be used in distributing the loot.

As if that was not enough, another faux pas was when he said some of the tickets “will be distributed among the Siwelele (Bloemfontein Celtic supporters).”

This came back to haunt him when one of the supporters who were given an opportunity to ask the dignitaries questions instead of the media doing that, asked what the Mayor’s statement meant to other PSL club supporters “such as Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates who are also residents in the Province?”

The mayor then said the tickets will be distributed through schools and we will also visit “shopping malls and informal settlements where people will be given tickets without being asked which club they support.”

Before all this, Siwelele, led by the prominent and well-travelled … gave those present a show to remember as they welcomed the dignitaries and the media group with song and dance that lasted for almost 20 minutes.

This just proved once more why Brazilian star Kaka and the Fifa big boss Sepp Blatter dubbed the Free State fans the best during the Fifa Confederation Cup last year.

Overall, the Bloemfontein Stadium looks ready to host the World Cup and the Mayor, in his official (written) speech promised that the roads leading and around the airport that are still under construction “will be completed before the tournament kicks off in June 2010” without giving a specific date.
