Mantashe shocked by ANC killing

ANC secretary-general Gwede Mantashe has reacted with shock to the assassination of a North West ANC regional secretary this morning.

Obuti Chika, the secretary of the Kenneth Kaunda region, was shot dead early today outside his house in Klerksdorp.

“I’m worried about Chika being killed, that worries me,” Mantashe told City Press.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Thulani Ngubane said no other people were injured in the shooting. “A murder docket has been opened,” he said.

North West premier Thandi Modise confirmed the victim was Chika.

Chika was supposed to attend the ANC’s national conference in Mangaung as a delegate. There were conflicting reports whether he was a supporter of President Jacob Zuma or Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe for the ANC’s presidency.

The North West ANC was further rocked by the suspension of provincial secretary Kabelo Mataboge this morning. Mataboge is seen as the leader of the pro-Motlanthe faction in the province and survived an attempted assassination outside his home last week.

North West Cosatu secretary Solly Phetoe has condemned Chika’s killing which he said was “politically motivated”, and said the police should immediately investigate it.

He described Chika as a leader who tried to manage relationships among the ANC and its allies.

“It seriously tells you that the ANC in the North West is so factionalised that people are being killed. The ANC must take serious action in relation to these factions in the North West. It can’t be that everytime we disagree somebody must be killed,” he said.

Modise said the police “(should) not leave any stone unturned until those responsible are brought to book”.

She said a number of officials in the province had been the target of violent crime in the past few weeks.

“The provincial government wants to know who is behind these assassinations (and attempted assassinations).”
