Manto’s body arrives at church

2009-12-22 10:55

The body of former health minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang has

arrived at the Catholic Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Pretoria for a special

state funeral this morning.

The coffin, wrapped in an African National Congress flag, was

escorted by a convoy including President Jacob Zuma, Deputy President Kgalema

Motlanthe and Tshabalala-Msimang’s family.

Members of the National People Living With HIV/Aids sang liberation

songs to bid her farewell.

“Comrade Tshabalala ukulale ngoxolo [rest in peace],” they sang at

the church entrance.

Zuma was expected to deliver an oration.

Tshabalala-Msimang would then be cremated at the Benoni crematorium

in a private service.

The streets leading to the church were closed and access to the

church was strictly limited with only accredited people allowed entry.

Tshabalala-Msimang died last Wednesday in Johannesburg of a

complication resulting from a liver transplant in 2007.
