Manyi appointed Cabinet spokesperson

2011-02-02 15:06

Former labour department director-general Jimmy Manyi had been appointed by President Jacob Zuma as head of the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS), a post that in effect makes him the new Cabinet spokesperson.

Manyi’s predecessor, Themba Maseko, has been redeployed to the Department of Public Service and Administration, where he has been given the position of director-general.

“Both Mr Maseko and Mr Manyi bring with them the wealth of experience and expertise from both the public and the private sector that will assist them in executing their duties.

“Mr Maseko requested to be moved within government following his four-year tenure in GCIS and Cabinet spokesperson,” said a statement issued by the presidency.

Manyi has been out of his job since June last year after former Labour Minister Membathisi Mdladlana suspended him following allegations by Norwegian diplomats that he appeared to be brokering black economic empowerment deals at a meeting with them early last year.

Disciplinary proceedings against Manyi fizzled out last year after Mdladlana requested a postponement. Madladlana was later axed from his post by Zuma in a major cabinet reshuffle.
