Manyi must be fired – Samwu

2011-03-08 07:14

Government spokesman Jimmy Manyi must be fired for his racial statements, the SA Municipal Workers’ Union (Samwu) has said.

“We condemn his statement and call upon the Zuma administration to show commitment to non-racialism and a working class bias to dismiss him,” general secretary Mthandeki Nhlapo said yesterday.

He said Manyi’s comment represents the arrogance of the African section of the middle class.

Manyi said in a show broadcast on KykNet’s Robinson Regstreeks in March 2010 that there was an “oversupply” of coloureds in the Western Cape.

At the time, he was labour department director-general.

The comments caused a public outcry, culminating in the publishing of an open letter to him from National Planning Minister Trevor Manuel, who called Manyi a “worst-order racist”.

Last week President Zuma called for restraint in the racial standoff. He said no one should use race for political grandstanding.
