Maqubela discharged, ‘under police guard’

The murder-accused widow of slain acting judge Patrick Maqubela, Thandi Maqubela, has been released from hospital in Johannesburg, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in the Western Cape said today.

“I can confirm that she’s been released,” said NPA provincial spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila.

Ntabazalila said she was “under police guard” in Joburg.

“She will be brought to Cape Town to attend court.”

Maqubela breached her bail conditions last Monday when she failed to appear in court for an inquiry into her legal representation.

On Friday, it was reported that she was at Helen Joseph hospital in Joburg.

At the time, the police only confirmed she was at the hospital, declining to say whether the police had found her at the hospital or if she had been arrested elsewhere and then taken there.

Ntabazalila said it would come out in court why she had been admitted to hospital.

Maqubela was found dead in his luxury Bantry Bay, Cape Town, flat in June 5 2009. His wife was arrested at her Sandton home in March last year, following allegations that he was poisoned.

A warrant of arrest was issued for her last Monday after she failed to appear in court.

The judge authorised the immediate issue and execution of the arrest warrant, and declared Maqubela’s bail provisionally estreated.

He scheduled a further pre-trial conference for Monday, and ordered Legal Aid authorities to report to him urgently on the possibility of providing Maqubela with legal representation at State expense.
