Maritzburg mayor in road crash

The mayor of KwaZulu-Natal’s Msunduzi municipality in Pietermaritzburg was involved in a car accident this morning, says the municipality.

“The mayor was on his way to a meeting when his vehicle collided with a truck on the N3 near the Mariannhill toll gate,” said municipality spokesperson Brian Zuma.

The driver, the mayor and his bodyguard were taken to Hillcrest hospital for a check-up, but they had sustained no injuries.

But ER24 paramedics said in a statement that a high- profile government official sustained serious injuries in the crash on the N3 outside Shongweni.

“Just after 10am, a municipality maintenance truck crashed into the blue-light vehicle which was headed towards Durban,” said spokesperson Luyanda Majija.

“The official sustained serious injuries and was stabilised on scene before transportation to Hillcrest hospital for further treatment. He was transported with his driver and bodyguard who both sustained minor injuries.”

Majija said a witness saw the collision take place in his rearview mirror and had seen a medium-sized truck drive across the highway and hit the car. Majija said two occupants of the truck, men in their forties, sustained minor injuries.
