When people think about downtown Joburg, particularly the area

around Park Central Taxi rank – or Noord to those in the know – the first word

that comes to mind is chaos.

The place might look crazier than an Indian bazaar but it’s also

full of good bargains – if you know where to look.

First off, nobody has money to buy R500 dresses at malls in January

– or any other month either. People might have stopped saying recession all the

time, but it’s still there. That’s why any real fan of good clothes makes a

point of finding the bargains.

Before you set off get the right gear for a bargain hunter. Pull on

a pair of flat shoes, carry a bag that’s easy to keep close to your body and put

on some pants.

On your way to Noord look out for a variety of fringe clothing

stores on Klein Street such as Caza Fashion.

They are gems when it comes to

finding items such as occasion dresses that cost about R250 and trendy tops that

range from R80 to R150.

They are also good spots for getting one-of-a-kind dresses for a

wedding or cocktail party?– at pre-payday, post-Christmas prices. Also, you

don’t have to carry cash if you are nervous?– all these places take cards.

Next is the Park Central Mall which lies on the corner of Noord and

Twist streets. From the outside it looks like any old shopping centre, but

inside it is a fashionista and pantsula’s dream.

For those into the township vibe, there’s a Skipper Bar and Webbers

that sell brands like Dickies, Converse All Star, Cerrutti and more.

For the brand crazy, Brand Mania is the place to be. It has last

season’s Identity store clothing at a quarter of the price as well as stuff from

River Island, Guess, Kangol, Sissy Boy, DKNY and beautiful Nine West bags and

purses. And, no, they’re not fake. Rather they have, at worst, tiny faults that

only people in the factory can see. So you get to wear labels at a fraction of

their normal price.

Just outside the shopping centre are the flea markets where you can

get beautiful earrings from R10 and just about anything else you need. So, take

a detour and see how little money it takes to stay fabulous.
