Martin Vilakazi steps down as Metro FM boss

2014-07-15 18:50

Metro FM station manager Martin Vilakazi has parted ways with the commercial radio station after three years at the helm.

SABC spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago today confirmed that Vilakazi’s contract - due to expire in October - was not renewed.

Vilakazi was last week informed that the relationship would end and given an option to leave early. Today was his last day.

“It was an amicable agreement that he will leave early and be paid up for the month,” said Kganyago.

He dismissed talk that Vilakazi was escorted out of the SABC Radio Park building earlier today.

“People just want to create drama around it. But he was told last week already that he would work until today, why would he be treated like that?”

Kganyago said no replacement had been appointed yet.

“He only left today and the acting station manager will be appointed soon. It’s not a train smash; the station will run whether there is no station manager for a day or two or not.”

On his Facebook account this morning, Vilakazi wrote: “Salute! It’s time to go! Thank you friends!” His friends congratulated and wished him well.

Speaking to City Press, Vilakazi said the business was taking a different direction and that he parts ways amicably with the public broadcaster.

“I appreciate the opportunity to work at Metro FM. The station has grown and we have increased revenues,” he said.

Vilakazi added that he would be taking a month’s break before deciding “where I can serve my country better”.
