Masekela, others join World Cup line-up

2010-05-04 11:49

Award-winning jazz musician Hugh Masekela and other South African

artists had been added to the World Cup kickoff concert following complaints by

local musicians that they were being sidelined, Fifa has announced.

“As South Africans, we are proud to be hosting the first World Cup

on African soil,” Masekela said in a statement.

“I am very humbled and flattered

to be part of this global event, and am looking forward to the concert.”

Afro-pop sensation Freshlyground, Mzansi Youth Choir, Soweto Gospel

Choir and African hip-hop artist K’naan will also be part of the June 10 concert

in Soweto.

The African artists will join Alicia Keys, The Black Eyed Peas,

Shakira, John Legend and The Parlotones, among others.

Niclas Ericson, Fifa’s director of TV, said: “We wanted to have an

eclectic, international mix of music genres to appeal to as many people as

possible around the world while showcasing the immense home-grown talent of the

host country.”

The star-studded kickoff concert will take place at Orlando Stadium

in Johannesburg’s historic Soweto township.
