Mashile’s diatribe was ‘fascist’

2009-10-23 11:50

THE article penned by talented and award-winning poet Lebo Mashile “Live, Love and Belong” (City Press, October 18) once again exposed the high levels of intellectual bankruptcy in our society and our ongoing celebration of mediocrity.

There is no ‘small’ nation on the face of the earth called Bapulane. There is a ‘big’ nation called Mapulana rooted not in Bushbuckridge (as a matter of fact Bushbuckridge is in Mpumalanga and not Limpopo), but Mapulaneng which covers a sizeable chunk of Mpumalanga. I know not of a single MoPulana who is “very comfortable referring to themselves as both Pedi (sic) and Bapulane (sic)”.

The biggest way to insult a MoPulana is to call them a MoPedi. Given that Mashile’s diatribe was during the World Summit on Arts and Culture one can sadly conclude that the world now carries that distorted narrow interpretation of our cultural identity as fact.

Next time the organisers should offer such a privilege to someone like Prof Pitika Ntuli or Dr Mathole Motshekga.

All Mashile had to do was to Google ‘Mapulaneng’ and she would have ended up with more academic references to assist in her speech instead of perpetuating a dangerous, fascist analysis of Mapulana, a victorious and proud nation.
