MasterChef SA arrives on local TV

2012-03-20 09:11

South African TV viewers can brace themselves for a world-class version of the popular cooking show MasterChef SA, which starts today at 7.30pm.

This is what M-Net spokesperson Ingrid Engelbrecht has said.

Amateur chefs will have to prepare dishes with secret ingredients over the following 18 weeks to impress the judges.

“The first episode is the auditions and the final contestants will be announced in the fourth episode,” said Engelbrecht.

Very jealous

M-Net didn’t want to reveal how many aspiring chefs will participate in the fourth episode and only said that they’re less than 20.

According to Engelbrecht, viewers can look forward to drama and laugh-out-loud moments. “The programme follows the Australian version, but there is definitely something truly South African to the food.

“Members of the production team of the Australian and British versions visited our kitchen and were very jealous,” she said.

The local version was filmed at Nederburg wine estate near Paarl in Western Cape.

Prizes
Thousands of cooks flocked to the auditions in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban in hopes that their dishes will impress the judges.

“We had all kinds of people show up at the auditions – from lawyers and grandmothers to matriculants.”

The aspiring chefs will compete for prizes worth about R8 million. This includes cash, a car and the chance to run a restaurant in a Southern Sun hotel.

Engelbrecht said the three judges – Benny Masekwameng, Andrew Atkinson and Pete Goffe-Wood – are the perfect mix for the programme.
