Mathoho – Chiefs’ property

2012-06-30 19:33

Bloemfontein Celtic and Bafana Bafana defender Mulomowandau Mathoho will in all likelihood be unveiled as a Kaizer Chiefs’ player tomorrow.

The towering Bloemfontein Celtic defender has agreed to terms with the club he has always followed.

There was a tug of war between Amakhosi and big spenders Mamelodi Sundowns, who according to a Celtic official, dangled a R3 million carrot plus the two players Ramahlwe Mphahlele and Buhle Mkhwanazi.

Chiefs coughed up R5 million.

Mathoho is the second Celtic player to join Chiefs, following Kgotso Moleko.

A Chiefs insider told City Press on Friday that Mathoho’s deal was done and dusted, with his contract starting today.

“He could not be unveiled with the other players on Thursday because he was not yet a Chiefs player, so only his jersey was shown,” said the source.

Chiefs unveiled six new players and displayed Mathoho’s jersey.

However, the 22-year-old player underwent medicals this week at Naturena after he made it clear he wanted to join Chiefs.

A high-ranking Celtic official said they could not go against the player’s wish after he made it clear he preferred Chiefs to Sundowns.

The official said the club had entertained both teams’ offers and gave them permission to speak to Mathoho.

“To us it was not a question of money,” said the official.

“Had it been like that, we could have played both teams against each other.”

We also had the choice of keeping him but it was not going to be in our interests to do so if that was against his will.

“He had made it clear he wanted out and told us he would not sign with anyone but Chiefs,” said the source.

Other players who have been signed in preparation for the coming season are Morgan Gould, Siboniso Gaxa, Siyabonga Nkosi, Brilliant Khuzwayo and Sakhile Hlongwa.
