Mayor: Swollen pay packages attract skills

2012-04-15 10:14

Last month, the Greater Tzaneen Municipality advertised five senior positions – each offering hefty annual packages of R920 000 a year.

The positions were for chief financial officer and directors of electrical engineering, planning and economic development, community development, and engineering and corporate services.

While these salaries beat the salaries earned by other directors, both at national and provincial government levels, Mayor Dikeledi Mmetle said the swollen pay packages were market related at local government level.

“These people are highly skilled and highly sou ght after. Their recruitment is part of our drive to improve service delivery. Without their skills, our efforts to try to improve the delivery of services will be fruitless,” she said.

Mmetle also thanked City Press for the Tatane Project and its focus on Mawa Block 9, saying: “It is a good thing that motivates us so that we must not relax. We must try to pull up our socks in order to assist our communities. Ou r intention is to help our communities and if the media assists us, and if you put a bit of pressure on us to work harder, we appreciate it.”
