Mbalula’s brother, 3 others in court over firearm

2012-04-16 14:18

The brother of Sports and Recreation Minster Fikile Mbalula, Jabu Mbalula, appeared briefly in the Bloemfontein Magistrates Court today.

Jabu Mbalula, spokesperson for the Free State department of health, and three other accused – Lefa Maema, Lawrence Mathae and Zamile Gewili – appeared in a packed courtroom on a charge of the illegal possession of a firearm.

Police spokesperson Captain Harry Nagel said the police received information on Saturday that a white Jaguar travelling on the N8 between Bloemfontein and Thaba Nchu contained an unlicensed firearm.

“The Tactical Response Team then pulled the car over and they recovered an unlicensed firearm”, he said.

Nagel said the car was pulled over just outside Bloemfontein. The four men were then arrested and later released on bail of R2 000 each.

The case was postponed to May 18 2012 for further investigation and the accused were not asked to plead.

Eugene Holtzhausen from Eugene’s Attorneys in Bloemfontein is representing all the accused.

Magistrate Paula Barry is presiding and Charmaine Cloete is the prosecutor.
