Mbeki’s old friends – where are they now?

2013-09-15 14:00

How time flies. And so does Thabo Mbeki, the country’s former president.

Next Saturday, Mbeki jets off to New York on the day marking the fifth anniversary of the ANC’s decision to sack him as the nation’s president.

There, he is set to take part at a UN panel discussion on Sudan. The 71-year-old has been a mediator in the conflict between Sudan and South Sudan since 2009, the year after he left government.

Since his resignation, Mbeki has started the Thabo Mbeki Foundation, which is involved in running the Thabo Mbeki African Leadership Institute in conjunction with Unisa.

Mbeki is now both elder and statesman, and remains popular. Most of his inner circle is now an outer circle as our effort to track its members show.

Some have done better than others.

While two have gone into opposition party politics, most of Mbeki’s people are still ANC members but are engaged in global diplomacy or have retired to a life as scholars, thinkers and speakers.

One is an activist.

Mbeki’s old friends – where are they now?
