The KwaZulu-Natal health department has offered a mother a R7 million settlement after her son’s leg had to be amputated because of hospital neglect.

Thokozane Mkhize’s son Minenhle had to have his leg amputated at Prince Mshiyeni hospital when he was six years old.

The provincial department of health and Mkhize settled the lawsuit out of court yesterday, the Witness reported.

Minenhle broke his leg and fractured his left ankle when he fell out of a tree on April 29, 2008.

He was taken to hospital the next day and was treated as an outpatient. A plaster cast was placed below his knee and it covered his foot.

Two days later Minenhle and his mother returned to the hospital because he son was complaining of severe pain, but they were turned away.

They were told by medical staff the pain was normal. A few days later he could not move his toes and the skin on his left foot became dark.

His leg had to be amputated below the knee.
