An 11-year-old girl has qualified to play in the US Women’s Open – becoming the youngest player to do so in the history of the major.

Lucy Li, from Redwood Shores, California, booked a place in the prestigious event scheduled for June 19-22.

Li, who was born on October 1 2002, shot rounds of 74 and 68 in the sectional qualifiers on Monday at Half Moon Bay’s Old Course in California.

She destroyed the field by seven shots to book a place in the prestigious event.

Her qualification has enabled her to surpass the tournament record set by fellow American Lexi Thompson, who was 12 when she was part of the 2007 US Open field.

Li emerged victorious from her age section of the inaugural Drive, Chip & Putt Championship at Augusta, Georgia, immediately before the Masters in April. Last year, she qualified for the US Women’s Amateur Public Links.

Her latest feat came just a day after veteran golfer Miguel Ángel Jiménez became the oldest winner on the European Tour at the age of 50.

The cigar-smoking Spaniard won the Spanish Open last Sunday, breaking his own record in the process.
