Mental observation for mother of toddler wandering on highway

2014-09-16 14:59

A 19-year-old woman whose son was found wandering on the N1 near the Grasmere off-ramp was sent for mental observation by the Vereeniging Magistrates’ Court today.

“The court has referred her to Sterkfontein so that her mental state can be checked,” said Gauteng traffic police spokesperson Busaphi Nxumalo, referring to a facility outside Krugersdorp.

The woman was arrested on the night of April 5, two days after her 16-month-old boy narrowly escaped being hit by a truck while walking along the N1 highway near the Grasmere off-ramp.

She was found guilty of attempted murder and child abandonment.

The case was postponed to December 2.
