Metrorail planning better, faster service

2013-07-11 17:50

Metrorail intends to improve its service to customers, the Passenger Rail Agency of SA (Prasa) has said.

A plan aimed at meeting commuters’ needs had been put into place, Prasa CEO Mosenngwa Mofi said today in a statement.

“The plan has been designed to address key issues of overcrowding, slow journey times compared to road-based modes, and variable time tables.”

The five-point plan would ensure service redesign, improved timetables, acceleration of infrastructure improvements, security and safety of assets, and operational safety.

The Prasa owns 317 of the 468 stations Metrorail operates, with the remainder belonging to Transnet Freight Rail, according to Metrorail’s website.

“The old and poor condition of rolling stock and infrastructure impact negatively on the ability of Metrorail in achieving its objective of delivering quality services to customers,” Mofi said.

Prasa had set aside R54 billion for the next 10 years for new trains.

“Prasa is currently implementing a major rail renewal investment programme amounting to R32 billion over the next three years,” he said.

Signals, communications, stations, rail networks, depots, and coaches would be upgraded.
