Metrorail service back on track after strike

2010-01-29 11:09

METRORAIL services in Johannesburg improved “significantly” this

morning as striking workers returned to work, an official has said.

“We have noted a significant improvement in operations this

morning, which is way better since the strike began,” said Metrorail

spokesperson Sibusiso Ngomane.

“We have 75% operational capacity in Gauteng South.”

Metrorail operations in Gauteng North were not much affected by the

strike this week, he added.

“Gauteng North operations has been 100%.”

He urged the remaining striking workers to return to work.

“We know many employees are afraid to return to work because they

are afraid of intimidation,” said Ngomane.

Workers had until Friday to obey a court interdict to go back to

work.

The strike started on Monday when SA Transport and Allied Workers’

Union members refused to work as scheduled under a new roster which they said

would cause job losses.
