Mfiki to blow the whistle again

2013-09-06 16:53

Two South African match officials are back on the international panel after passing their physical fitness test in Malawi today.

Lwandile Mfiki and Lufuno Nemagovhani had to undergo the assessment in Malawi after they failed the test in July.

But Thembisile Windvoël failed to complete the assessment and will not be part of the panel.

The trio had to travel to Malawi at their own expense after they failed the national test in July.

Safa’s head of referees Lindile Ace Kika said they were happy to welcome the two back onto the panel.

Kika said he was more excited about Nemagovhani, who is the only female referee in the country on the international panel.

“We have been having only female assistants and we are happy for Lufuno. This means a lot to the country,” said Kika.

But Kika said Nemagovhani would not be able to officiate in the PSL until she passes men’s fitness test, according to the new directive from Fifa.

“It is a blessing in disguise to have Lwandile back especially after the retirement of Buyile (Gqubule) and the fact that Jerome (Damon) is still out. His experience will give us more depth to the team.”

Gqubule announced he was retiring the whistle this week due to a persistent injury, while Damon failed to run last week’s test due to illness.
