Minister concerned by old age homes taking pensioners’ grants

2011-02-15 14:26

Social Development Minister Bathatabile Dlamini expressed concern today that some old age homes were “illegitimately” taking the grants of pensioners living there.

“We also urge NGOs that are funded by government to offer services to older persons to use the funds we allocate to them for the intended purpose,” said Dlamini, who met with representative of the Black Sash and the SA Older Persons Forum in Cape Town.

The meeting was described as part of ongoing consultations in the social sector to improve services to older people.

Dlamini was questioned over the conduct of various service providers contracted to pay out social grants on behalf of the SA Social Security Agency (Sassa).

She promised that a meeting would be convened between the department, stakeholders, Sassa and the service providers in a quest to address the concerns.

Other issues discussed included coordinating older people’s programmes at local level, establishing older people’s forums, monitoring quality of care in residential facilities, access to social grants, and employment of personnel in residential facilities and other government services.
