Minors held for Balfour protests

2010-02-11 13:19

THREE minors arrested during the violent protests in Balfour will

be held at a place of safety after they appeared in court this morning,

Mpumalanga police have said.

The three minors were granted bail of R500 each, along with 11

other protesters who had been charged with public violence.

“Unfortunately their parents weren’t present, so they will be held

at a place of safety until the February 18, when they will come back to court,”

said Sergeant Sam Tshabalala.

The minors were to be released to their parents’ care. Tshabalala

said should the parents be traced before February 18, this would happen.

The situation in the township was “very, very calm” at noon on

Thursday, said Tshabalala.

“We are hoping it will return to normal during the course of the

day.”

Tshabalala said there were reports of a community meeting to be

held just after noon to discuss the situation.

The township has seen violent protests this week including

disruption of schooling and the burning of the community library.
