Missing toddler’s mum receives ‘strange’ phone calls

Police in Theunissen, near Welkom in the Free State, are investigating “every possible lead” in the case of a missing 3-year-old toddler from the area.

This comes after it emerged that the boy’s mother had been receiving “strange” phone calls.

Captain Matsietsi Helepi from the Bultfontein Family Violence and Sexual Crimes unit said police were investigating the calls and the possibility that they were linked to the missing boy.

“The person did not mention the missing boy or demand money, but indicated that he would like to meet the mother in Vereeniging,” she said.

Lehlohonolo Tsie (3) went missing on June 16 while gathering wood in the forest with his mother, Seipati, and his sister, Ditwele.

“The mother went deeper into the forest and asked the kids to wait for her. But on her return, the boy was missing,” said Captain Stephen Thakeng, spokesperson for the police.

He said the search and rescue unit of the police and the dog unit launched an extensive search of the area but could not find anything.

A case of kidnapping was opened.
