Mixed results for SA athletes at Qatar Diamond League meet

2014-05-10 11:58

SA star long jumpers Khotso Mokoena and Zarck Visser came short in their attempts to earn points in the opening round of the IAAF Diamond League in Qatar.

Olympic javelin thrower Sunette Viljoen was the only member of the six-strong SA track-and-field contingent who managed to salvage a point. A 64.23m throw earning her a third-place finish last night.

Visser leaped 7.74m for fifth place while Mokoena recorded a distance of 7.68m, which was good enough for sixth.

The Doha meet was the first competition for Mokoena in the long jump, having started the season as the national triple jump champion.

In the 800m final, Andre Olivier finished seventh in a time of 1:45.39.

World Championships bronze medallist Johan Cronje finished a distant 10th (3:33.31) in the 1500m race, which was won by Kenyan Asbel Kiprop, the man who beat Cronje for gold at the global meeting in Russia last year.

Victor Hogan was placed sixth with his throw of 62.14m in the discus final.

The Doha Diamond League was the first of 14 meets of the lucrative international one-day, track-and-field series, which will culminate in Brussels, Belgium, in September.

The next event will take place in Shanghai, China, on Wednesday.
