Mkhwanazi welcomes Madonsela probe

2012-04-26 14:43

Acting national police commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi today welcomed the Public Protector’s decision to investigate him for alleged abuse of power and improper conduct.

“If there is an investigation I will co-operate 100%, I am actually happy,” Mkhwanazi told reporters in Pretoria.

“I will encourage any inquiry from anybody and I will give my full co-operation.”

Mkhwanazi said he was a disciplined member of the police and had been fighting crime for as long as he could remember.

“I’m actually happy and I would be very happy if something (an investigation) could happen.”

He was responding to a decision by Public Protector Thuli Madonsela, announced yesterday, that she would investigate allegations that he failed to investigate the abuse of the police’s secret intelligence fund.

Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa, his family, and a divisional commissioner had allegedly misused the fund.

Democratic Alliance MP Dianne Kohler Barnard had asked Madonsela to investigate the matter.

She also claimed she had been told of how Mkhwanazi was part of a group of police officers who had killed an innocent man.

She said she had been informed that Mkhwanazi apparently told about 50 police officers about the incident in March.
