Banyana Banyana coach Joseph Mkhonza has defended his decision to exclude seasoned striker Portia Modise on his 21-lady squad currently at camp.

“Portia does not make up the team, there are other players who deserve opportunities as well,” he said during a Media Open Day in Eilandsfontein, Gauteng, today.

Mkhonza added that this was an opportunity to try out new players and that Modise was an established player.

This despite other experienced players such as Noko Motlou and Janine van Wyk who are part of the current squad.

“We know what Portia can do but now we are focused on preparing for the future,” said Mkhonza.

“There must be Banyana even when Portia no longer plays and that’s what we are trying to do.”

The ladies are hard at training preparing for their international friendly with neighbours Zimbabwe on Saturday as they prepare for the Cosafa Cup to be played later this year.

On-form midfielder Ayanda Dlamini expressed her happiness over the progress of the team following their 5-0 demolition of Mozambique last Sunday.

The former captain said the spirit was high at the camp and attributed her form to “decreased pressure” after relinquishing the captain’s armband early this year to focus on her studies.
