Mom fears cougar on the prowl

The mother of Blue Bull Deon Helberg (21) said she still fears for her child’s life.

Marlene Helberg said her son and their family are especially concerned about his safety since Manda Reyneke (47), who allegedly planned a hit on the young Helberg, was released on bail on Monday.

“We feel Deon is not yet beyond danger and we want to protect him as best we can.

That is why we will not disclose where he is living at the moment,” Helberg said yesterday.

“It’s going well with him under the circumstances, and with me, but we are still somewhat afraid,” she said.

Helberg indicated that her son is not yet feeling ready to speak to the media.

Plotting a second hit Johan Lourens, Deon Helberg’s uncle and a spokesperson for the family, said recently he is worried about the possibility that Reyneke might also have hired other hitmen at the time, or that she could now be plotting a second hit.

“After all, she’s walking around free, so what’s to stop her?” Lourens said.Reyneke is believed to be receiving psychological treatment at an unknown agency following her arrest a week ago.She was arrested in a sting by the police’s Hawks minutes after she apparently paid two Nigerians for “murdering” Helberg.

The men allegedly sent Reyneke a posed photo of a “dead” Helberg with a “bullet wound in the chest”.

Totally surprised, Beeld went to Reyneke’s home in Silver Lakes yesterday to see Reyneke’s daughter, Jalien Reyneke (20), or any other family members, but no one was in.

A friend of the young Helberg who knew him at the time he was dating Reyneke’s daughter, said on Wednesday he was “totally surprised” at the news that Helberg also had a relationship with Reyneke herself during that time.

“It took me completely by surprise,” said the friend, who wishes to remain anonymous, “I saw him a lot with Jalien and didn’t suspect anything strange. They appeared perfectly normal.”
