Oscar Pistorius inherited an anxiety disorder from his mother, who raised him and his siblings to “see the external world as threatening”.

This is the opinion of Professor Merryll Vorster, a forensic psychiatrist, who was this morning called to the witness stand by the defence.

Vorster conducted interviews with Pistorius’ siblings as well as other friends and family.

She said it appeared “his mother was a very anxious person and abused alcohol intermittently”.

“It appears the children were not soothed by their mother but they all developed features of anxiety.”

Vorster said that after the divorce of Pistorius’ parents, when he was six, “the children were reared to see the external environment as threatening”.

“Instead of their mother being in a position, if there was a threat, to relieve the children’s anxiety, she added to their anxiety.”

Vorster’s testimony is a key part of the defence case, which hopes to show that Pistorius was particularly concerned about safety.

Vorster’s testimony continues.
