Mondli Zuma’s drink-driving case adjourned

2013-09-10 11:24

The drink-driving case which sunk Lt-Gen Bethuel Mondli Zuma’s appointment as Gauteng SA Police Service (SAPS) commissioner has been adjourned by the Pietermaritzburg Magistrates’ Court.

Court officials said the case of drink-driving, resisting arrest and defeating the ends of justice against Zuma, who was arrested at a roadblock in September 2008 and fled to avoid giving a blood sample, had been rolled over until tomorrow as the magistrate who was hearing the case was away on a course. It will resume tomorrow.

National Police Commissioner General Riah Phiyega notoriously appointed and then hastily removed Zuma, a former VIP Protection Unit head, on the same day, as he had not informed police management of his pending case during his screening for the appointment.

Zuma, who joined the SAPS in 1994 and is not related to President Jacob Zuma, is facing disciplinary action for not abiding by an SAPS internal directive that all officers disclose any criminal records or pending cases.
