More arrests after 4 killed in mall shooting

2014-08-19 08:48

Two more people were arrested for allegedly shooting dead four men and injuring others at a shopping centre in Evaton, south of Johannesburg, Gauteng police said.

Lieutenant-Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said eight people were arrested yesterday for the shooting at Palm Springs mall.

“Three of these suspects were shot and wounded and are under police guard at the Sebokeng Hospital,” he said today.

“Eleven rifles and a hand gun were confiscated from security guards (Gumede Protection Service). The guards are alleged to have been employed by a taxi association operating from the Palm Springs shopping mall.”

He said four minibus taxis were also impounded.

Dlamini said investigations would continue and the number of arrests may increase.

He said police would monitor the situation.

Yesterday, Dlamini said members of two taxi associations arrived at the Palm Springs Mall and opened fire on each other with handguns and rifles.

ER24 spokesperson Luyanda Majija said the four men, including a security guard, were already dead when paramedics arrived on the scene.

Another man sustained critical injuries and was taken to Sebokeng Hospital.

Three other security guards sustained moderate injuries from an alleged assault and were taken to the Mediclinic Emfuleni in Vanderbijlpark.
