More than 9 000 unqualified teachers in KZN schools – DA

2010-12-11 09:25

There are 9 003 unqualified teachers teaching in KwaZulu-Natal schools, according to the Democratic Alliance (DA).

“Of these unqualified teachers 20 had not even attained a grade 12 and another 8 317 had a grade 12 qualification and no other qualification,” DA Member of Parliament, Alf Lees, said.

He said in a statement these statistics were according to a parliamentary question asked of Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga.

Lees said the real problem was not finding environments in which teachers were willing to teach, but in resourcing teacher training facilities which would be accessible to students in rural areas.

Comment from the department of basic education was not immediately available.
