Morgan Freeman recommends reading to gogo on Mandela Day

2013-07-18 16:45

Hollywood star Morgan Freeman took time out from his busy filming schedule to ask people around the globe to pledge their time to a good cause on International Mandela Day.

In a YouTube clip released by his publicist, Stan Rosenfield, Freeman says Madiba spent 67 years fighting for social justice, and asks people to contribute 67 minutes to improving the lives of others today. He suggests charitable actions like reading to your grandmother, painting a school, or walking a neighbour’s dog.

Freeman is currently in talks to star opposite Scarlett Johansson in a new action flick called Lucy by French director Luc Besson.

The 76-year-old actor befriended former president Nelson Mandela in 2009 while doing research for the film Invictus, in which he played Mandela. Directed by Clint Eastwood, the movie chronicled the Springbok 1995 Rugby World Cup victory over New Zealand at Ellis Park Stadium in Pretoria.

Freeman received an Oscar nomination for the part, as did actor Matt Damon for his portrayal of Bok captain Francois Pienaar.

At the time, Freeman said in an interview he inherited a Madiba shirt from the Invictus film shoot. He said he looked forward to wearing the colourful shirt back in his hometown of Charleston in Mississippi.
